No Microsoft pages

When I try to access any www.microsoft.com site, a file
download box opens that says "Getting file information: /
from www.microsoft.com" Next, a pop-up appears that
says "IE cannot download / from www.microsoft.com. IE is
unable to open the web page."
The browser (IE6 SP1) works fine going to any other site
including www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Cache and history have both been cleaned.
How do I override the file transfer and get the web pages
to load as they should?

This may sound too easy but when I have problem
like this I just logoff-login and problem is fixed.
