No Messenger Svc To Disable

R

Rob

I have 2 computers. One has XP Pro and the other XP Home
Edition. I have disabled the messenger service on the
pro version but on the home edition version the messenger
service does not show up in services. Know of anyway to
make the messenger service show up so I can disable it?

Thanks,

Rob

Hi, Rob,
You could try the following which is a copy of an helpfile posted in the
PCAdvisor magazine:

Kill the messenger, humanely
February's tip Shoot the Windows Messenger prompted Nasr Hamid to pass on a
way of getting rid of it that doesn't involve using the Registry Editor.
Click on Start, then Run, enter the following, and then click ok:
rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Note: this will remove Messenger permanently, so this tip isn't suitable for
use by those who would like to retain the option of re-enabling it for
occasional use. When we first tried
Nasr's tip, it didn't work, because he hadn't typed the command exactly. The
command is case sensitive and the only spaces in it should be after
`rund1132' and before '%windir%'.

Thanks Graham. Will that disable Windows Messenger or
the messenger service associated with networking, ie "net
send"? When I go to adminstrative tools then services in
my Pro version messenger service is listed there but in
my home edition it is not. I know other people with home
edition and it is there. Don't know why mine isn't. :(
