At some point my windows explorer on my system has stopped recognizing
zip files as compressed folders. In addition, the create popup menu no
longer has teh crompressed folder option.

How can I repairt this?

Download and apply the .zip file association fix from here:
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/

Both the problems should be fixed.

I've tried these. While windows now recognizes zip files, I can still
not create a zip folder from explorer.

To compress a file or folder
1. Locate the file or folder that you want to compress.
2. Right-click the file or folder, point to Send To, and then click Compressed (zipped) Folder.

A new compressed folder is created. To rename it, right-click the folder, click Rename, and then type the new name.

Faceman,

You might consider using the free program 7-Zip instead. I use it
without any problems. Just download the correct 32 bit or 64 bit
version for your Vista. After you install 7-Zip, run it and click Tools
-> Options and select all the file extensions you want 7-Zip to be able
to open.

'7-Zip' (http://www.7-zip.org/)

I installed 7-Zip, but it won't more than a fraction of a second for me.
