no longer able to view jpeg images

I have a PC running Windows XP w/SP2. I take digital photos and store them
on my hard drive. It seems that I can have a good jpeg image file on the
hard drive and once it is opened, it then becomes damaged and will not
preview in the thumbnail of Windows Explorer or open in any application. I
get a "No Preview Available" or "File Format Is Not Supported" error.

I have read some support articles about this, but it addresses compression
issues w/AOL & Compuserve. I do not use either. I have also read support
articles that deal with SP2 and not being able to view images in HTML
documents and images being blocked in Outlook. None of these address my
issue.Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Sorry for the multiple posts and thank you for your suggestions.
Unfortunately, none of the articles referenced addresses the problem that I
am having. The first article addresses the No Preview Available" and "File
Format Is Not Supported" Error, which is what I get, but I do not use AOL or
CompuServe. I read the second article, but it deals with image problems when
opening an HTML file. I have no issues with photos in HTML documents. And
the third article deals with blocked images in Outlook, which is not my issue.

Any other suggestions?
Thank you.
