No logon servers available

I have a Windows 2000 computer on my home network and am
trying to access either of my WinXP Home computers.
Within Windows Explorer, I get an error message that reads:

"[computer name] is not accessible.

There are currently no logon servers available to service
the logon request."

I am unable to access any directories on the other PCs,
yet the other PCs can share files. This is an
intermittent problem. Most of the time it works fine, and
I don't know what causes it not to. The Microsoft
knowledge base did not have any information to help me.

Thanks!

Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that all useraccounts
exist on all computers. Got File- and printersharing loaded?

Hi,

I'm inclined to believe that this Windows 2000 machine is joined to a domain
(and is probably from someplace like your office network). What's occurring
is that the 2000 box is trying to contact a domain controller, which
processes logons and other credentials stuff. When it can't find the domain
controller, it just stops.

Have you tried either a) logging on locally to the 2000 box or b) putting
the XP machines in a workgroup with the same name as the domain the 2k box
is on?

Brian,

Yes, it's on my office network. I will try what you've
suggested. Thanks! Do you know why it would be
intermittent? I can access the other PCs most of the
time, and when if fails, it suddenly starts working again,
with no rebooting.

Thanks,
Dave

I don't have a definite answer as to why it's intermittent. Here's a
workaround to connect to your xp home boxes from the 2K one:

Open up a command prompt (start>run>cmd)
enter this as the command (one line):
net use \\XPHomeComputerName\IPC$
/u:XPHomeComputerName\SomeAdministratorUsername /persistent:yes

You'll be prompted for a password. Type it in and press enter. You should be
able to access resources on the XP box(es) you run this command against. The
/persistent switch should make it live across logons, but you may need to do
this each time you logon.
