No local area connection listed in 'network connections'

I have recelntly purchased a Sony VAIO P4 2.66, 256megs memory, win XP, from ebay. I tried to install a Linksys wireless network card, wmp54g, and after install, there is no local area connection showing up in the network connections window. I called Linksys, and they told me that the networking properties of my OS were screwed up. Can anyone tell me how to get a local area connection to display? Also, when I run the network setup wizard, it tells me that my wireless card is disconnected, and it tells me to conenct all cables and hardware
Thank you for your time.

Were you prompted to install the driver, and did you use the correct XP
driver?
Does the wireless card show up in device manager?

XP found the card, and had me insert the cd that came with the card. There was only one driver on the cd, so I am certain that it was the correct driver

Yes.

I don't know about Linksys, but all of the wireless cards that I have used
require you to install software before you insert the card for the first
time. You may need to remove the card from device manager and then install
the software. You may also need to uninstall the software and reinstall it.
Check the documentation that came with the card.

I did follow the documentation that came with the card, to no avail. That is when I called Linksys and they ran thru some things with me and decided that the network portion of my XP was messed up.
