no internet connection after xp reinstallation cd

I have reinstall XP back to factory settings. Now I am unable to connect to
the internet. Try to bring up IE and get the page not found message.
After I did the clean install, I did not also install all the drivers for
your hardware? - why? - because I don't know which ones to install.
I can see drivers available for my laptop at Dell Support site but don't
know which ones I need to load.
Reading other threads on this forum, to find out what hardware is on my
computer, I downloaded, installed and ran the free Belarc Advisor - BUT what
am I looking at in the report?. I can't see anything in there that states
'hardware'.
QUESTION: where on the belarc advisor report do I find the hardware details
that I need in order to download the correct drivers?

Here is one way to learn what drivers are needed. First, one needs
to know the hardware that needs the drivers. From My Computer, right
click on Properties. Go to Hardware and open Device Manager. Identify
the hardware for every instance where this is yellow triangle with an
exclamation mark. The most common would typically be modem, network
adapters, Display adapters, Monitor, and so on. From the support site
at Dell.com, download these drivers and install. Continue until there
are no more warning triangles.

The other way is to locate the Inspiron utility cdrom that should have
shipped with the laptop. Install the drivers from this cdrom.

Good luck.

Thank you M for that info, I have tried what you suggest and when I open
Device Manager, and under ‘Other Devices’ there are 6 entries (with yellow ?
and ! marks against them):
Ethernet Controller
Multimedia Audio Control
Network Controller
O2Micro SmartCardBus_Reader
PCI Modem
Video Controller (VGA Compatible).
Then, when I right-click properties on any one of them, e.g. ‘Ethernet
Controller’, I get the following information under the ‘General’ tab:
Device type: Other devices
Manufacturer: Unknown.
There is also other information under the ‘Details’ tab, such as ‘Device
Instance ID’.
QUESTION: how do I find out, from this info, what drivers are required?

Repost your 2 messages in alt.sys.pc-clone.dell. At the same time,
state the model of Dell laptop. There are enough Dell experts and
users at that newsgroup who should be able to tell you exactly what
files to download from support.dell.com.

Thanks again M, have done what you suggested, whilst waiting for any further
advice here.

JOd,

Since you found all the drivers for your laptop, download and install
ALL of them... and then try to connect to the internet again...

Dear McFly,
Thanks for the suggestion, which I will take if all else fails - but there
are DOZENS of drivers!
Regards, JOd.
