No Internet available after Network Setup Wizard

I have a Windows XP desktop connected to a Windows XP laptop via a cross over UTP cable.
With the Network Setup Wizard I was able to share folders on my desktop. However, I am not able to access the Internet anymore via the modem that is installed in the desktop. It looks like it is not possible to access the DNS server. However, when I run ipconfig /all I see the DNS servers and can even ping them.
I think the error I made during running the network wizard was, that I was not connected to the Internet.
I would like to uninstall the network and rerun the network setup wizard. How could I do this?
Many thanks in advance,
Ronald

Thanks, but it is not possible to rerun it correctly, because I cannot make a connection to the Internet anymore, which is a prerequisite.
