no sorry the screen does not freeze. I turn the computer
on and it is not online like it normally would be since I
have DSL. I can do anything that does not have to do with
being online :(

I also had a friend over who could ping the laptop but
when he tried pinging the upstairs desktop from either
the desktop or laptop it timed out.

Open TCP/IP properties of the connection, General tab, Advanced
properties, Options tab, TCP/IP filtering properties, Check Enable
filtering, change Permit Only to Permit All. You should disable the
Windows firewall and get a third-party firewall when doing this. See if
this helps.

Ok the same thing was happening to me and I went to these forums. In one
them a user used WISOCKXPFIX
from http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

Apperantly there is some corruption in the winsocket due to SP2.
I installed it and clicked "fix" and then rebooted. Make sure that in IE6 //
Tools // Internet Options // Connections // Lan Settings //

You have checked "Automatically detect settings"
Do not provide proxy server information if you do not need it.

This is my config.

Router = Linksys 54GS
PC = winxp & sp2 // now connects
Apple = powerbook with airport // always connected
DHCP provided by router.

hopefully this works
