*** No Intenet Connection ***

Fred S *****

I know this is an XP newsgroup but I'm having a problem with a WinME PC
that needs a fresh look and this group can do that. I have posted this
on the Networking group and I'm extremely disappointed that there has
not even been one response for more than a week.

Basically, this PC will NOT connect to the www. I just reports that the
page can't be found and to check the internet settings.

Here's the information, with the hope that someone can assist:

"Hi,

This was posted for a few days now with no responses at all. Is this
problem that bad? I'm commenting once again as a last hope for assistance.

I've tried a number of things;

I downloaded WSOCK32.DLL (online) and copied that using a DOS boot. At
least the "explorer" error has stopped but again NOTHING happens when I
try to access the internet.

Removed Communications from the Windows Add/Remove Programs SETUP
section. Rebooted and set Communication back - SAME PROB.

I've gone to DOS and tried PING 127.0.0.1 and got NO responses and error
10091 (?) which MS Article advises TCP/IP removal and restore - SAME PROB.

Happens with DialUp and happens with cable disconnected. The NIC is fine
as I've switched it into another WinME PC that I'm working on and
everything on that PC is fine. So the NIC and cable connection is OK

IE and FF each note that they can't access the net.

Please, if anyone has an idea, please advise as I have to return the PC
soon and advise them to just trash the damn thing, Shame since it works
fine for their needs other than this problem.

Fred S
I have more info on this problem.

I just tried to connect using dialup and got the same error message
which is "firefox has caused an error in unknown"
It does the same thing for IE, "Explorer has caused an error in unknown"

I know the dialup connection worked, I can hear it on the modem
speaker and the phone extension.
When I completely disconnect the cable AND phone line I get the same
error - so something weird is going on.
It appears that there may in fact be a connection but for some reason
all programs crash or rather won't run as the error appears and the only
option is to close the program.
Does this shed any more light on this problem?

Need some help here.

Thanks again Fred

You say
"So the NIC and cable connection is OK...just reports that the
page can't be found and to check the internet settings."
This sounds as if youa re connecting but your browser settings are
preventing acces to the web page.

For help on this you are not in the right Group, try :
Windows.public.internetexplorer.general.

I would try reinstalling the OS.

It sounds like you may have a broken Layered Service Provider (LSP) in your WINSOCK.

Use LSP Fix to remove the broken LSP Plug-In.

Have you tried moving the NIC to a different PCI slot? Have you tried
using other types of cards (USB, Modem, Video) in this PCI slot to
make sure it has not failed? When you go to device manager (Right
click the "My Computer" icon and click properties. "Hardware" tab,
"Device Manager" button (I belive, no ME to test on), does it show an
error on the NIC under the Network Adapters option, or does it show an
error on any other devices? Good luck, and don't let the other people
here lead you away from asking questions. I would understand if you
had not posted on another news group, but we should be trying to help
people who wander in and ask questions we can answer.

David,

Thanks for your suggestion, most appreciated.

I decided to avoid the WinME General group as there is little or no
traffic there and its been that way for quite a while. Worse, the lack
of any suggestions at all from the Networking group was a shocker to me
as someone at least will suggest something. Numerous MVP's are there and
other savvy posters but not one reply.

Regardless, I DL's and ran lspfix and it reports "No Problems Found" and
no action necessary.

So, back to square one.

WinXP General is for Windows XP questions. There is a reason why there are so many News
Groups in the Microsoft hierarchy.

One should always encourage posters to post in the CORRECT News Group related to their
question and discourage "Off Topic" posts.

RBot,

Thanks for the input.

Device Mgr says all is well, including the modem. The cable via the NIC
card and the modem produce the same problem - a Page cannot load screen
in the browser.

John,

Thanks, this shows in both FireFox and IE and the AdAware update just
reports "error accessing update" or something like that.

So it's not an IE problem - something is blocking access to the www.

By the way, the AVG antivirus SW has been disabled and the ZA firewall
has also been disable during this trouble shooting period.

Fred:

You SHOULD post there as that's the place to ask WinME questions and asking them here is
improper as such discussions are "Off Topic". The WinME General News Group is alive and
well and Mike Maltby is there to help [as well as many others]. All you have to do is ask.

If your problem is NOT LSP relatedm, I suggests stripping out all devices and protocols.

Right-Click on "my network places" and chosoe Properties. Delete all from the configuration
and reboot.

When you reboot rebuild as needed.

David,

I made a post there as you suggested - we'll soon see. Mike and Jack
Martinelli are two great guys and I hope they can help. I've been there
before many times - I think this is a network issue, not a WinME issue.

However, regarding your comment, I've already done that. I've even
removed "Communications" from the Windows Add/Remove Setup and
reinstalled that - no dice.

I also did a Windows repair install - ran the setup program (after
creating an image file for safety) and NO DICE.

Any other ideas?

Fred, Again, have you verified that the card is even being
recongized? In other words, is the slot that it is installed in
working condition? Can you put another card in the slot that the NIC
is in and verify that it works in this PCI slot?

David, I know what you mean by encouraging people to post in the
correct newsgoup. All I am saying, is if you are going to take the
time to post that a user should post in another newsgroup, but you
might know the answer to that person's question, why not attempt to
assist that individual? Yes, he should post in another newsgroup, but
if you CAN give him the help he needs, give it to him. Then you can
add as a sidenote that he/she should post in a different newsgroup for
future question. That's all I'm trying to say.

F

Fred S *****

RBot,

Yes, I've done that. Also, it shows in Dev Mgr. Windows asks for the
driver when I insert the card, etc. etc. I've switched it with the modem
and once again, NEITHER the modem nor the card will access the internet.
I think I provided that info in the original post.

Ok, so you can see network shares, but you cannot ping 127.0.0.1 Can
you ping the IP address of remote computers that contain these
shares? Do you have any type of AntiVirus or Firewall installed on
the machine? Disable these if you do. I have seen where Norton will
not allow any connections to the internet (or any other device for
that matter) until it has gone through some type of initial
configuration. I would disable it just as a test to see if you get
connectivity. By the way, I would recommend testing your internet
connectivity by pinging www.google.com or www.yahoo.com or some other
website instead of checking it by opening FF or IE. These are
applications that could have issues themselves that you want to
avoid. First lets try to get some type of connection using Ping, then
we will test to see if IE works. Post back with progress please.

R

RBot

I have also seen people who have had this problem have to completely
remove their Symantec product to resolve this issue. It is possible
that disabling it will not completely resolve your problems.

RBot,

I see that your posts do not include the previous posts. In those you
will see that I've done nearly all of that. The initial post with this
info is time stamped at 10:50 AM.

I have uninstalled the firewall but the AVG anti-virus program is shut
down from msconfig.

Cant ping anything, everything comes back with 4 packets (?) sent and
zero returned.

I read your initial post, and the reason I do not put previous posts
in my responses (which, by the way, neither do yours) is due to the
fact that your post was very long and included the same info multiple
times. I have been trying to help you any way I can, and I'm sorry
that we haven't come up with a solution. I guess you really are
better off in the networking or ME group.
