Hello
I have a Canon scanner which is usb 2
Had to re-install WinXP from the recovery cd and now when i use my
scanner i get the message "hi-speed usb device plugged into a non

Have you done all the recommended updates for your newly installed XP?

Have you installed SP1 and the chipset driver for your motherboard? Also,
are your USB connections marked as 'enhanced' in the device manager?

No i haven't, just the updates that get downloaded

What updates should i get for newly installed XP?

Martin

Have you installed SP1

No, how do i do that?
and the chipset driver for your motherboard?

No, not since the re-install
Should i have a cd with the chipset driver on it?
Also, are your USB connections marked as 'enhanced' in the device manager?

Well one is Standard Enhanced PCI to USB host controller
properties - "No drivers are installed for this device"

Two are Standard OpenHCD USB controller, One is USB printing support
and there are two USB Root Hub > properties for all 5 - this device is
working properly

Martin

you need to install xp sp1 then intel usb 2.0 drivers if you have intel
chipset.

The same way you did before. You must have had it installed for it to have
worked before - USB2 support is only enabled with the installation of SP1.

I have absolutely no idea. Visit the website of your PC manufacturer or the
motherboard manufacturer and download the driver.

Well one is Standard Enhanced PCI to USB host controller

That's odd - 'standard enhanced' is a bit of an oxymoron. They're either
'standard' (USB1 or 1.1) or 'enhanced' (USB"). I've not come across
'standard enhanced'.

Is it - so am I to understand by that it's USB1(.1) then?

I haven't done it before. It was a new PC and when i installed the
scanner it just worked

Thanks I'll try that

No, the scanner is definitely USB 2

OK, if it's a new PC, then it's most likely already installed - what does it
state if you right click my computer and select 'properties'? All new
systems sold within the last year or so have most likely been shipped with
the later version of XP that already includes SP1

It's an AMD Athlon

Hyperion 4in1 drivers from AMD will have the USB2 support. AMD USB2
controllers are labeled "standard enhanced". Windows update has the SP1
update. Do this first, then the Hyperion drivers.

No, that's your /processor/, not the chipset. AMD doesn't produce its own
chipsets. And 'dmac' is incorrect, it isn't just Intel boards that require
chipset drivers for USB2 support - it's /all/ motherboards. Below is a list
of chipsets (someone add to it if I've neglected to include any)

Intel
SiS
VIA
nForce (produced by nVidia)
nForce 2

You can learn much about your system by downloading, and installing, Aida32
from www.aida32.hu. Be sure to download the 'Enterprise' edition to learn
the most about your computer. It will tell you what chipset your motherboard
has and even includes a link to the manufacturer's download site.

Ah, it's Chipset Properties
Motherboard Chipset nVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400

You will need to visit the motherboard manufacturer's website - or nVidia -
for a driver then.

Your recovery CD probably does not include XP SP1, which is necessary
for support of USB 2.0
