no hard drive

i have a friends computer which is showing a blue error screen at start up
basically saying that no hard drive can be found.

if i remove and re-seat the i.d.e cable it works again and windows xp will
start, however i keep having to do this quite regularly.

motherboard is IWILL ka266 plus (which did not seem to take too well to win
xp in the first place), maxtor 40gb hdd, 512mb ram, amd athlon xp processor
1.8ghz.

i'm not sure if the problem is the motherboard or what but why should
re-seating the cable make any difference?

thanks.

Try cleaning the MB prongs with cleaner, also the
cable. My guess is that you have a faulty cable, not making
good contact with MB prongs,or may have a prong bent, thus
not making good contact.also check MB for cracks around
the connection,or for bad soldier points.May want to try
some connection electrical greese(it's white put a SMALL
amount in the cable end,use Q tip to remove x-cess),can
get it at auto parts store like autozone, electric
greese,bout a buck there.Try a new cable first.Good luck.
