No Group Software Install snap-in

Using XP Pro MMC Group Policy snap-in, I have read the instructions frontward and backward and have no success enabling the software installation sub-account under "Software Settings" for the Computer or User in Group Policy. I want to assign software to the various different users on the local stand-alone PC, so I don't have to install it from CD on each desktop. What's the secret to enabling "Software Installation" under "Software Settings? I've tried on four different new PCs, 2 Dell and 2 IBM and I must be blinded by something.

I do follow that tree process... " Double-click Software Settings, and then click Software installation", but there isn't any "Software Installation" to click on. Having the same results on 4 PCs there must be a reason its not there??

As far as I knowm that is only available on a domain (2000 or 2003 Server.)
It can be deployed to XP Pro clients but needs to be defined on the domain.

That would explain it. MSFT should pin a footnote on the instructions that its for domain use only. I was trying to install as an Administrator and then assign the software to other users on a single PC. So I guess I have to install Office for each user on a PC.... how frustrating is that!

Generally if you install Office once on a PC, everyone will have access to
it... The first time they run it, it will do a quick little mini setup to
create a profile but that doesn't need admin rights.

Carey's post should help if they aren't seeing the shortcuts in Start Menu,
but Microsoft's products are pretty well-behaved in multi-user PCs.
