No Global Catalog

Danny

Hello all.
My issue is a bit twisted, but here goes. I have a
single AD tree with (I thought) two DCs and three member
servers. A couple of days ago, two things happened, one
after the other. First, one of my DCs failed completely
(hardware). No biggie, that's why we have two, both with
the global catalog for redundancy. Well, when I went to
replace the failed DC with a new one, I brought the new
one up, promoted it, etc.. just fine. My problem (and
the twist) comes when, yesterday, I went to make the new
one a global catalog server also. It seems my company's
management thought that selling the DC that contained my
only copy of the catalog would be a nice trick. I won't
bore you with the details on that. It was never even
demoted or removed from the domain, just unplugged and
taken. I can't create users or anything else until I get
a global catalog back online.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance for any assistance.

If you managed to join the new server to the domain and promote it to
DC, than it is not a big deal. Check on the Global Catalog setting and it
will begin rebuilding a new GC, make sure you seize all the FSMO roles
from the new box ( I am assuming the new server is the only DC left.)

Once the server is functioning as a GC, make sure Exchange Servers
recognize it as such and be careful for any Outlook 2003 setups running
in Cached Mode.

Cheers,
