no event sounds - puzzled

I am puzzled as to why I now have no Windows event sounds - start
up/exit/incoming mail etc even though a scheme is selected and are audible
when the "play" button is pressed.
This was ok until a few weeks ago - possibly around the time I installed
Windows 2000 SP4 - but cannot be sure exactly when.
All other aspects of audio are fine - music etc, mouse click . . .

Anyone else experienced this?

Advice/comments appreciated.

If you go to Control Panel, Sounds, are any sounds listed next to these
events?

The events are all there as usual with the speaker icon next to those that
have a sound attached. They play when you press the play button, but not in
use in Windows.
