No display / no boot with video adaptor installed

This problem just happend suddenly with no changes having been
made to system.
Display went blank, monitor power light lights green
during boot but display is blank. Boot stops at
post code 39 (test dma registers).
It will continue through to boot attempt (FF) with no
video adaptor installed in slot.
I've tried two *other* video cards, two pci-e and one pci and get the
same results with all of them. The PCI card is brand new.
Swapped memory, even swapped out the motherboard w/the same model.
The only things left are CPU and Power supply and monitor.
Could a monitor cause this? Otherwise, what on the power supply should
I test? The 4 pin plug?

Problem solved. The monitor is dead. I connected it to my laptop and
that didn't work either.
I don't know why I didn't think to try that earlier. The post code sent
me off in the wrong direction, I guess.
