No display in application log w2000

I was having problems connecting to most websites, so
decided to look in the event viewer, the system log
displays all the items but the application log displays
nothing although it indicates there are 1574 items. If i
click on the right panel of event viewer it showes a blue
bas as if there is an item and I can use the up/down
arrows to move but nothing is displayed.

Sounds like you are at SP4. Apply the hotfix from this article
