No Desktop

When i stsrt my laptop up and sign in, i have no desktop icons or 'start'
button ther is no task bar on the screen all there is is the background
colour.
Can anyone advise on what might be wrong?
 
Once you get to the background colour Press and hold the Ctrl and Shift keys
and then tap the Esc key. This should bring up the task manager. Once in
Task Manager click on File and then Click New Task. Type explorer.exe and
click ok.

Does this load your desktop? If so follow the instructions in here
