This one has no desktop tab in Properties. I tried the tip at kelly's
korner regarding it, rebooted, no change.

If those keys exist in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
as well, delete them too.

Good morning again Singapore and much thanks for the reply.
System was the one we talked about yesterday that I deleted entries in.
Was there another you meant to tell me to delete entries in also?

Explorer??

Actv.Desktop??

thank you Singapore..

this a.m. you said "system....them too"

Were there other ones to delete as well?

No change in desktop tab after reboot.
(see above)

Hello,

Its 0030hrs here :)

Anyway, the only two keys I mentioned in my replies are in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

If you navigate to them using Registry Editor and find values of these names
inside them..

NoColorChoice
NoDispAppearancePage
NoDispBackgroundPage
NoDispCPL
NoDispScrSavPage
NoDispSettingsPage
NoSizeChoice
NoVisualStylesChoice

...delete them and see if it solves your issue.

Singapore, you are being so patient and deligent, and it is deeply
appreciated.

Meticulously got two other entries, went under all the names on the
list. Had two entries which were deleted. reboot. no change.

=======
perused MS document, it stated any "Wallpaper" entry to delete. That
was done.
The young owner of this machine stated in an effort to help "work on
it" had done chkdsk, scannow, and 4 antivir-spy-trojan scans, as well
as

desk.cpl (for desktop tab)

in between this forum.

Still no desktop tab.

Professor Joe

SingaporeWebDesign has brought this to us :
Hello,

Try searching for other occurrences of NoDispAppearancePage as well as the
other keys mentioned just now in the registry and delete them.

good morning Singapore and again much deep thanks for all your patience
and help. Scans have all been done in safe mode. Still no change in
desktop tab.

Had thought about fresh install (boy here come the questions on that
issue LOL) never done it, and computer students (first year) have not
covered that yet, but we have a great place (here) to come to with
questions.

Was just originally hoping that as small, yet persnickety problem this
has been, that a quick fix would have worked.

We'll get our stuff together for gutting it out and installing, I am
confident we'll be back :)
