no desktop showing

I have recently updated win2000 server with the security
patches and sp4 and on the reboot the desktop has
disapeared, all the services run no problem, the only
thing that isnt working is the desktop, just a blank blue
screen, to run any aplications you have to use task
manager, any ideas, i have trawled the KB and found no joy
there.

Can you run explorer.exe from the task manager? Does the desktop
appear when you do so?
