No desktop after login! Uh oh.

Here's a weird one, I am at a clients site the other day and their
Win2K advance server has never been patched, so I noticed some minor
quirks when working on it, property pages not appearing in user
manager, slow sluggish etc. Ran adaware and removed over 150 pieces of
adware and spyware, virus defs where out of date, like from back to
2004 sometime. I updated and scanned, found a couple minor virus
items, removed them so on and so forth.

Well here is where is gets weird. I d/l the SP4 cumulative package and
install it. Now when the server reboots and you log in with the admin
account (or any account for that matter) you don't get a desktop. You
do get a message that some service, or at least one service failed to
start, but that's it. No task bar, start button, nothing, just the
background.

Ctrl Alt Del sometimes brings up the task manager and I can restart,
log out etc, but doesn't seem to matter what account I use to log in
it's always the same.

I have googled this and there are several suggested solutions which I
have yet to try, but if anyone has seen this before in a 2K server I
would be very interested in what the issue was for you.

I would rather not uninstall SP4 as I highly doubt it is the problem
so much as perhaps the problem was always there, it just took SP4 to
bring it to the surface.

Any suggestions or feedback is welcome.

TIA

A guess would be that some of that corrupted stuff you had to remove was
also linked to some necessary system files. You might try an "in
place" install or use "SFC /scannow" to try to bring the system back to
some degree of normalcy. You'll need to re-install SP4 after either of
those two actions.
