No Computer Power Down on Win XP Shutdown

System: AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 2.20 GHz, 1Mb of RAM, Win XP SP2

Recently my computer fails to power down after shutting down Win XP.
Start-Turn Off Computer-Turn Off proceeds normally but after the system shuts
down, the computer remains on and must be turned off manually. How can I fix
it so that the computer powers down automatically after Win XP shuts down?
Thanks.

Hi Will,

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried the relevant suggestions in the
Powerdown Issues section of the recommended web site but the problem wasn't
fixed.

This is my situation. ACPI is enabled in my BIOS. There is no APM tab in
the Power Options Properties dialog box in Control Panel. After Win XP shuts
down, I can power off by pressing the power button on the computer for about
5 seconds.

Have you added any new hardware lately?

Poorly-written drivers can cause this.

I replaced a faulty hard drive a few days ago but the problem began well
after the new drive was put in and the OS and programs were installed and
used.

Using System Restore, roll back to a point
before the problem started.

Could be another defective MS update foisted upon
you by Automatic Updates...
