It is in beta right now. No beta testers can reveal that they ar
testing, however. And no, I am not one. And yes, I am disappointed

I can imagine a terrific game under Vista..

Then imagine there being 4 (and possibly 6) different versions
of MSFS.

It was just made public that they are bringing back the Standard
Edition/Professional edition scheme. There's 2. There's talk of there
being a 64bit version as well as a 32bit version, so there's 4. Thirdly,
there may be a DX9 and DX10 variant, making 6.

Will it happen? good question. We'll have to wait and see.

DX10 support should be done with a simple patch, according to the
development team. 64 and 32 bit versions may be on the same DVD.
Remember that all the geography data and terrain and bitmaps are all
going to be the same for either version. Only the actual core program
will need to be 64-bit.

As far as a professional and a standard. I don't mind, really. I'm
going to get the professional, anyway. It's more for the flight sim
enthusiast, as the standard is for the newcomers that want a
"game". Don't worry, they'll be back next release as
enthusiasts and buy the pro version! ;)

I don't see how this is going to work. From the MSFS programmers
I've talked to and whose blogs I've read, DX10 is going to be a totally
different bear to DX9. It wasn't going to be backwards compatible
(actual article claiming that was posted in this group). So I don't
think there is going to be a patch available for this.

I don't mind it either, as I'll be going for the deluxe edition
anyway. I just see the possibility of at least 8 different versions
coming out, should this rumour be true. If so, it will cause problems
for people trying to find out which version they need and why.

From the hints that the developers have given in the AVSim forums, it
appears that it will not be "enabled" by a patch, but more
likely that it will be a fairly larger downloaded "patch"
that has the DX10 features. It shouldn't be too large, seeing that
the majority of the size of the program is in the textures and
extra's.
