Mike

I'm trying to backup my registry so I can clean it, and I
look up how to do this in Microsoft's Knowledge Base and
it says to use the Backup Utility for XP via Start/All
Programs/Accessories/System Tools, but there is no Backup
Utility there. So how do i get this backup utility or
repair my XP to show it or any other way of fixing this
problem. Thanks for reading.

The MS backup utility isn't installed by default in XP Home, but you can
install is manually from X:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP (substitute your CD drive
letter for X).

If all that you wish to do is back up the Registry, I suggest using the
"export" feature in Regedit.

HTH.

Address altered to avoid spam. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

Insert the XP or Rescue CD, and run NTBACKUP.MSI
program

from the folder D:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP

You can get a copy here:

In XP Home the ASR Floppy Disk does not work . It will
NOT backup to a CD. You can back up to a folder on your
hard drive then burn it to a CD. The native program in
XP will not span CD's though.

Here is how to use it;

Windows Backup Does Not Back Up to CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R

You can trick it with a packet writing program like Roxio
Direct CD & Drag and Drop (comes with Easy CD Creator )
Or Nero InCD or Sonic DLA You then use a CD ( will not
Span cd's) or DVD's (4.7+ gb) to back up to though.

Mike,

Open Windows Explorer and search 'ntbackup' and
lauch utillity from there OR insert your Windows XP CD
into your CD drive and click R for Repair Installation.

Good Luck,

Brian

Never use Export to backup your registry

"The "Export registry" function in Regedit is USELESS (!)
to make a complete backup of the registry. Neither does
it export the whole registry (for example, no information
from the "SECURITY" hive is saved), nor can the exported
file be used later to replace the current registry with
the old one. Instead, if you re-import the file, it is
merged with the current registry, leaving you with an
absolute mess of
old and new registry keys."

To Back up.

In XP the registry is backed up each day as part of the day's restore
point, or in any manual point you make. So use that; not Backup, at
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore.

An alternative tool, useful as a secondary one, is ERUNT from

Alex - I take the point about the Registry being automatically backed up but
is there a Backup utility somewhere in Windows XP Home? Previous editions
of Windows came with a fairly straightforward backup program but Ican't find
one in XP.

The Backup utility is not included in the default installation of Windows XP
Home Edition, but you can manually install it
1.. Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location on the
Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM to start a wizard that installs Backup:
CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP

2.. When the wizard is complete, click Finish.
