When I right click on my desktop > Properties and then
click on Background tab, I'd receive the following error
message:

rundll32.exe generated an error and will terminate.

Any ideas please

Thanks

rundll32.exe is an integral part of the system, so either
it has been compromised by e.g. a virus, or the dll it
is running has been compromised (more likely). So we
have to ask you some standard questions about your
system like:

[1] What OS version and service pack?
[2] Single user/networked/domain?
[3] What are your security permissions?
[4] What permissions do you browse with?
[5] Do you have AV/firewall/router protection?
[6] Is this the only problem you have?
[7] Anything else you can think of?

Hi Alan and thank you.

[1] What OS version and service pack?

Windows 2000 pro Sp4

[2] Single user/networked/domain?

Single user, Networked and not in the domain.

[3] What are your security permissions?

I am the Administrator.

[4] What permissions do you browse with?

Admin permissions

[5] Do you have AV/firewall/router protection?

Yes but not a router.

[6] Is this the only problem you have?

Yes.

[7] Anything else you can think of?

Not really.

=========

Is there any way I can replace the rundll32.exe. If so,
do you know how and what are the implication ?

I appreciate it

Sean

I don't really think that rundll32.exe - the system would
hardly function at all without it. No, I think that you have
been compromised for browsing with the Admin account.
If a hacker gets through it can assume your permissions
and wreak havoc on your system. So the first thing to do
is create yourself a poweruser account with the minimum
permissions you can get away with, for browsing and email
only. Yes, only! Log off/log on as Admin for anything else.
If you're on a 24-hr DSL line, disable the modem (or something)
before using the Admin account.

Make sure that your password for this user account is long
and hopefully not easy to crack. What firewall are you using?
Do you log all events - to see what's getting through?

I would check with your AV supplier to see if there are any
antivirus updates. I'm using AVG7 from grisoft.com and there
is an update almost every three days. Then do the most complete
test of your system the antivirus software allows and let me know.
