No Auto Update Style

Every time I create a new document and make a style change, the Normal template is automatically updated. I have to access the Normal template and turn off Automatically Update Style in order to prevent this. How do you set the Normal template NOT to automatically update style changes as a default?

The info contained in the article is the way I'm doing it now. So I guess
the answer is "that's just the way it is".

No, that's not the answer. But an alternative solution that might work
for you is to click on Tools | Options | Save | check the "Prompt to
save Normal template" box. This way, if you have made changes to the
styles, you will get a prompt asking if you want to save your changes to
the global template Normal.dot, and you can answer "no" to discard the
changes.
