My Windows XP never has since installation shut down on
it's own. When I go to "start", "Shutdown" I have to wait
10 seconds for it to cue me "your computer is ready to
shut down". On all my other computers, it shuts off
automatically, but with this one I then have to hold the
power button until it shuts down manually.

Any ideas. My technician has run out of them.

This is a setting in the BIOS, probably under power
management but this will vary depending on the BIOS. Mine
for example has 2 settings, instant-off or delay, and I
can set the length of the delay (how long to hold the
power button). I, of course, choose instant-off.

Try going to control panel--- power options. slect the APM tab, check off
the box that says enable advanced power managment support
