no active network adapters found

this has happened 3 times on 3 different machines (2 xps and 1 windows 2003)
to me.

For some reason, when I click on networking tab in task manager, the message
shows "no active network adapters found". The result is I don't have network
connection on these machines.
Device manager does show the network cards, everything looks ok except the
machine will not see the NICs
please help!

Not at all.
I can configure the IP. But I can't ping localhost nor 127.0.0.1
When I ran ipconfig, it errors out.

I would suggest physically removing the cards, deleting the adapters
from Device manager, and see if they are rediscovered properly. I seem
to remember an issue similar to this on an MS-kb, but I couldn't find
it. See if that will work, and then monitor it to see if it happens
again.

Hope this helps!

I have tried that and re-installing TCP/IP as suggested at Microsoft website
but the problem is still.
Re-installing the NIC has no problem as Windows recognize it. I can
configure IP address for this NIC but somehow the network service does not
run.
On Windows XP I can roll back using system restore but Windows 2003 does not
have that feature.
When run ipconfig, error return "unable to query host name"

Sometimes the tcpip.sys file can get corrupted, and I've seen similar
symptoms. If you have a working XP system, copy the tcpip.sys file
from the good system and replace the file on the non-working system.
Advise us as to your progress.

I am getting a bit better by doing the following:
1. Install TCP/IP protocol from c:\windows\inf even though it is already
there. I noticed that TCP/IP Protocol Driver was missing in Device
Manager->Non-Plug and Play Drivers. This will put it back. Reboot.
2. Uninstall NIC, reboot, disable the NIC in BIOS or remove it from PC
3. When Windows completely start. Reboot again
4. Run netsh winsock reset. Reboot.
Now I get the display in Task Manager->Networking Tab.
However, I can't run ipconfig ....error "can not query host name" return. I
can ping 127.0.0.1 now though.
Will keep you posted

I got the NIC back, receive an IP from DHCP server but name resolution does
not work. I thought winsock was corrupted, remove winsock and winsock2 in
registry. Reboot. Now I can't receive any IP at all.
I noticed that when I receive IP from DHCP, when running ipconfig it always
say that netbios over tcp/ip is disabled no matter how I change it in network
property.
strange.!!
