Nis 2006

Today I was working on another Norton Internet Security issue. After
getting the software back up and running, the customer wanted to renew
their subscription. We went to the online site and noticed that the price
for the yearly subscription was now $39, and the new version upgrade is
now $49, has Symantec slipped in a price increase this year ? After 2
hours of fixing NIS, I tried my best to talk them out of it as I don't want
anymore of these PITA setups to work on. I told her to wait a couple
of days before going ahead with the subscription renewal. If they have
raised prices across the board that's really a bad move on their part.

The really bad part is considering installing that garbage in the first
place.. get the customer to go with free AVG and Kerio firewall.. Sygate is
ok presently, but it has been acquired by Symantec, so prepare for the
spiral dive.. another decent utility bites the dust.. :)

New customer, so I didn't have any input on the choice for security
software. Sygate is a good product, but for how long is anybody's
guess. After that original posting, I was reading some of the days
Tech news and saw the following on CNet.

These yearly renewal costs on PCs are getting pretty excessive. For
households with 2 or more PCs it's starting to add up to the cost of
the Dell weekly special. Speaking of that, I found an article that says
Dell is ending the "Free Shipping". Guess now you can get the PC for
$300 and expect ~$50 for shipping.

Anyway, I'm starting to see more customers who when given a choice
for AV are opting for AVG Free instead of eTrust or any Fee driven
product. Maybe it's a choice between filling their gas tanks or keeping
the PC protected.
