Nikon Scan 2.5 Problem

Hello,

I bought a Nikon LS2000 last week and got it to run successfully
under Win2000 using the bundled Nikon Scan 2.5. The GUI needs
getting used to, but I scanned in about 36 slides on Sunday,
and started scanning film strips on Monday - again with success.
Tuesday evening I scanned in a strip of 4 negatives and then closed
down Nikon Scan. When I started it up again the thumbnail-draw was
missing. I thought I'd inadvertently resized to almost nothing, but
no amount of clicking and dragging opened it again. This seems to
make scanning negatives more difficult because I can no longer
select all the negs on the strip and batch scan, but have to
scan each individually.

I reinstalled the software, but the problem is still there, so I
assume that a configuration file somewhere in the system is the
cause (I've also tried putting the settings to default, but to no
avail). I'm no Windows expert, so I have no idea where to look
for configuration files (if that is the problem).

Of course I could download Nikon Scan 3.1.2 or install the
SilverFast software bundled with the scanner. but before I do that
I'd like to solve this problem.

Can anyone give me a tip?

You could try searching the registry for the Nikon Scan registry entries.

To start the registry editor:
Start>Run. Type regedit press Enter.

Warning: You can really screw up your computer with regedit. Be extremely
careful.

Look in the Program folder where Nikon Scan is located, open any .ini files
with a text editor such as Notepad. Look for entries that may be the
selection box. It could be located out of sight.

When you uninstall programs and drivers in Windows, some parts of the
program remain and have to be manually removed.

That is Microsoft's fault, Microsoft says if in doubt, leave the file(s)
when uninstalling programs and drivers.

There should be a program called in the utilities folder on the Nikon Scan
CD. This program must be run to clean out the registry before you reinstall
the software.

Most problems with Nikon Scan 2.5 are cured by an update to Nikon Scan 3.0
or later.

I'm basing this on the behaviour of NikonScan 4. The software recognises
which adapter you have in the scanner. If you are using the single slide
adapter you do not get a thumbnail drawer. Could it be that for some reason
it isn't detecting the film-strip adapter? Try removing and replacing it in
case it's a contact problem.

Nick.

thanks to all of you.

The vertical bar up near the top left of the GUI appears
when the film adapter is in, and when I mouse-over it changes
to a vertical row of little buttons. Pressing one of these used
to open the thumbnail drawer, but now only displays a green
arrow as if the drawer dimensions are 0x0.

Anyway I've uninstalled NikonScan 2.5 using the uninstall utility
and I've downloaded and installed NikonScan 3.1.2 and it works
so far. The download also includes a readme about uninstalling
junk in the registry and makes it sound very dangerous!
