How can I give a short nickname to a contact? For example, if my friend's
name is Alexander and his email address is (e-mail address removed),
how can I set up a contact so that if I type in "Al" it will find his name or
email address?

All current versions do this already using the autocompletion feature once
you send a message to Al. Note that the autocompletion cache has nothing to
do with your Contacts.
We also have no idea what version you are using. Always post your version
before you ask a question.
