I understand that Windows Vista doesn't come with outlook express but with
windows mail instead. I also understand that windows mail doesn't support
newsgroups except for microsoft's own news servers.

1: why did microsoft do this after 11 years of intergrating newsgroup
support into windows via outlook express?

2: where will people who choose to upgrade to windows vista go for newsgroup
support?

3: will microsoft offer a newsgroup tool as an addon maybe in a service pack
or download in the future?

thanks for your help

Your understanding is incorrect. Windows Mail is configured by default with
microsoft's news server but you can configure additional news accounts using
whatever server you want/have access to.

They didn't.

Anywhere they want.

There is no need to as Windows Mail supports connecting to multiple news
servers, not just Microsoft's servers.

Michael;
You understand wrong.
Windows Mail does in fact support news servers.
Right now I am using Windows Mail and accessing several news servers not all
of them are Microsoft.

That was probably a misreading of the announcement for the Office 2007
trial. No announcement has been made for Vista trial editions and probably
won't be (if at all) until at or after Vista Launch.

There is a newsgroup for Windows Mail at
microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail.

There was a thread by brady Preheim(sp?) on November 14th about a possible
public rtm. There are several posts there referring to a possible 30-60 day
trial version of vista being available on december 1st. Also in the past
Microsoft has made available trial versions of business windows that work
for 160-240 days (mainly 240 i believe)..

But not until after Launch. The Dec 1 date corresponds to the Office 2007
trial which began on Nov 30. I'm telling you that this is rehashing a
mistaken comment in this ng. A few people misread the announcement of the
trial and thought it was both Office and Vista. Here we are a week on with
a trial of Office and no trial of Vista. Draw your own conclusion. ;)

You understand wrong. Windows Mail can send/receive to any news server
that Outlook Express can. I used it for my ISP's nres server in RC1, RC2
and now RTM.

Yes, but I personally prefer to say that Windows Mail is just the new name
for Outlook Express.

They are much the same program, but Windows Mail incorporates some changes
and additions.

But that's not at all true. I'm sending this reply in Windows Mail, and it
is configured to use five different news servers. In this respect, it work
exactly as it did in Outlook Express 6.

Michael,
The Microsoft Communities server you see is still the old
msnews.microsoft.com, just renamed.
And Windows Mail will host any nntp server; like everyone has said.

The change to standard Unix mail format is an enormous plus - it makes
moving mail between different apps very easy. I have started using Windows
Mail (for mail) with that key change.

As as some omissions (Hotmail support) and some extra bugs (too numerous to
mention). The new store format and search function are nice, but the new
bugs counter those advances. I don't care about the lack of Hotmail support
anymore as I have switched to using Outlook for my email accounts, and I
don't know why I didn't do this ages ago. I use WM with the /outnews
argument on the shortcuts and it would be nice if they sorted out the bugs,
but I am pessimistic about that happening anytime soon, or ever.

Thank goodness Microsoft added their news servers to Vista. I haven't been
able to use a Outlook Express for news for a while because my current ISP
doesn't have news servers service and I guess I just don't know enough about
news servers to find another. All my previous ISPs have had their own that
I connected to.

After seeing that newsgroups in Vista worked without me setting up the
server, I checked the news server setting and used the msnews.microsoft.com
server for all my PCs. While I haven't tried it, it looks to me like you
could edit the server configured. The box is definitely editable.

I wasn't trying to assess which is better, but only to to point out that
they are essentially the same. Changing the name doesn't make it a different
product. Despite the new name, WM is essentially just the latest release of
OE.

And I didn't mean to imply anything about your assessment either :) - only
to point out that having a default NNTP server set in there is a good thing
for many people who aren't intimate with the functioning of NNTP
newsgroups - like me. And I'm an MCAD, MCSE, and MCDBA. I just don't know
NNTP. So, for a lot of us, having a default setting in there that works is
a great thing! :)

I wasn't disagreeing with on anything. I was just saying that WM (OE7) is
a worse than OE6 in a few ways.

Hotmail Popper works fine with Vista and Windows Mail for collecting
Hotmail (I do have UAC turned off). You just have to lie about your email
address when you set the account up (i.e. don't mention Hotmail) then
change it afterwards. It's collecting mail from both my paid and free
(very old) accounts.

Hurray for someone who likes it. The MVPs campaigned for a long time to get
them to fix the message store.

That was the idea. So users can easily get to newsgroups on the msnews
server to find out how to fix all those Vista bugs. <G>
