Hi,

To some this will seem like a silly question, but since I`m still new to the
News Group using OE to read them, how do I get access to the other messeges
in one news group? For example, I see in windowsxp.general there are
(95434) unread messages. But on my messege pain, I probably only see 50 or
100 at a time. As I delete messeges I don`t need, it gets smaller untill
newly created messegs appear. So incase I want to actually read all 95434
messeges, how would I do that? Thank you

Jeff

Go to tools, options, read tab
set to 700 - about 2 days worth.

go to tools, download next 700 headers.

Now you have 700 or 1400?
Sync news group will download new headers.
When you click to see read pain that is downloading a message.

You don't really want 95,434 headers on your PC. lol But you could go back
until you get 8-10K.

To start over --
every so often go to file, work off line,
then go to tools, options, manage
reset
compact

then go to file, uncheck work off line.
go to tools, message, download next 700 headers

Reeks of UNIX, doesn't it? lol
At least it has vowels.

Hi Jeffrey,

Click tools/download next xxx headers. Or you can start synchronizing it.

More like almost 1 days worth. I usually get more than 800 new headers a
day.

The way you synchronise ( download messages ) needs to suit you.
However, when you set up a new newsgroup check the box in Tools,
Options, Read, Get xxx headers at a time (you can change the default to
any number between 50 and 999). Set the synchronisation to New not All.
Then select Tools, Get next xxx headers, after downloading has completed
select Tools, Mark for Offline and then select Synchronise, Newsgroup
and only those Marked. Remove the check mark in Tools, Options, Read,
Get xxx headers at a time. For all future downloads use Synchronise,
preferably Synchronise All. Using the procedure described for a large
newsgroup avoids downloading thousands of messages you may never read.

Another option if you read Online is to make your Synchronisation option
Headers only. You then select and download bodies for only those
messages you intend to read. Yet another alternative if you read
Offline, is to use Headers only and then to Mark selected Headers whilst
Offline and then Synchronise for marked messages reading the selected
messages later Offline.

Hope this helps.

And if you untick the "get xxx headers" box you get them all.

I am resetting my NGs right now, this NG alone has over 1,115,000 messages! I have a rule set to delete messages over x days old.

As others have posted, you can increase the number of downloaded headers etc. But, if you
don't access the news group daily, you could miss hundreds of posts, and or waste hard
drive space downloading all of those headers. Chances are, if you have a question, it
might have already been asked and answered. For READING and SEARCHING for posts, I like
Google, which archives years of posts, and has a quick search engine for finding the posts
in this news group with the answers that I need.
