John Fitzsimons

For the first time, Suse linux is making its operating system
(personal version, NOT professional version) available on its mirrors
for download as an .iso!
kernel is 2.6.4 I believe...
Here's where I got mine --

According to ;

SUSE LINUX 9.1 Personal

Only US $ 29.95

Looks like a free download of shareware.

SUSE LINUX Download

SUSE offers the possibility to install SUSE LINUX free of charge directly
from the FTP server. The function scope of FTP versions is virtually the
same as that of the "normal" version. Merely a few program packages have
been excluded due to license reasons. The installation support is not
included either.

Mandrake 10 has the same structure with more free stuff. Might be worth a
try though.

No, I don't believe so. The Personal Edition comes in a boxed set
with multiple CDs and manuals.

This is the single download ISO which they never did before. You used
to have to do an FTP download as the only way to install SUSE without
buying it. This is a step up.

Kudos to Novell.

Here is further info which I guess should qualify it as a "Demo":

How to use the SUSE LINUX 9.1 Personal CD-iso image:

1. Download the ISO file SUSE-9.1-personal-x86.iso from the public ftp
server or ftp.suse.com mirror of your choice. For this you will need
about 702 MB of storage space.

2. Use a burning application of your choice to burn the ISO file to a
blank CD-R/CD-RW.

3. Insert the CD in your CD or DVD drive and boot your system from it. The
regular SUSE Linux 9.1 personal installation starts.

4. Test your new SUSE LINUX and take a look at the office, e-mail, Internet,
photograph management, and other applications.

5. Impressed? Then visit the SUSE home page and order your full Personal
version with detailed documentation and free installation support. Or
order your SUSE LINUX 9.1 Professoinal Update version.

A single .iso to install is a BIG step up for them!
