News server disconnection on Vista

Hi Guys

I've been having immediate server disconnections (TCPIP disconnect) when
connecting to my ISP's news server with Vista (NNTP port 119). Dual Boot
in XP connects fine. Some days I can connect and get a list of the groups
available but it disconnects again when trying to read an article. I've
tried a second news server and the same happens (they run Linux based
servers). news.microsoft.com works however.

Does anyone know whow to get rid of this annoying Vista bug?

Regards
Johan

Have you tried a different NNTP client besides Opera?

Vista bug?

I would suggest the problem may be with your setup or newsgroup reader. I
connect to several news servers on my Vista machine without problem.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the reply's. That was the 1st thing I tried. Microsoft Mail
(Outlook Express) does the same : immediate disconnect.

I tried to telnet to the news server on port 119 and it disconnects
immediatley in Vista (not in XP). If I telnet to msnews.microsoft.com on
port 119 everything works:

Telnet output: 200 NNTP Service 6.0.3790.1830 Version: 6.0.3790.1830 Posting
Allowed

Its something in Vista. Any ideas? Thanks

Does this happen only on port 119? Not with 80? What about ftp?

As with the others who responded, I've not seen this problem on Vista
so I'm thinking maybe it's either a Windows firewall problem or a
problem with the Vista driver for your ethernet chip.

Dunno, just grasping at straws here.

I'm also guessing some kind of firewall problem. What firewall are you
using?

Hi again guys

Wow you respond fast. I use Kaspersky 6 but its not that since
MSNews.mocrosoft.com also works on 119 and works great. Its my ISP and the
national UUNET server that disconnects immediatley in Vista. Yesterday
everything worked fine, this morning again it disconnects immediatley on
connecting. I'm convinced its something in the vista tcpip stack though.
Could it be a DNS resolving issue these this servers alone? I'll try to get
the IP of the server and add this manually to the news agent. Dont think my
ISP has the DNS entry right.

Johan
