News reading with Outlook

I'm not sure why MS doesn't just put the News option on the Outlook menu and
makes you add it, but when I tried to add it, there is no News entry in the
list of buttons to add. I followed the instructions (On the Standard
toolbar, click the Toolbar Options arrow; Point to Add or Remove Buttons,
and then click Customize; Click the Commands tab; In the Categories list,
click Go; In the Commands list, click News....). There's the problem.
There is no News entry to click in the Commands list. Doubly weird is that
I believe I added News to the Go menu awhile back and Outlook just seems to
have lost it from there, too.

They don't put it on the menu because it made people think Outlook include a
newsreader and it doesn't - and it never will.

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, click the "Don't ask me again" box and then click the No button.

You may need to reset the menu or toolbar using Tools, customize.

made people think . . .

OE is still free, right? I still have to wonder why they would have a
problem with what people think? "No, Outlook does not include a free
newsreader, but you can install OE, which is free, and call that in
newsreader mode from Outlook" is the response. It's hard to imagine why
anyone would have a problem with that. And if people get a little confused
about whether it's Outlook doing the work or OE, does it really matter that
much?

I did get the news command back. I'm not sure how that got cleared. I
don't think about that Programs tab much, since it's kind of a "set and
forget" tab. Thanks for your help. I asked a couple of more questions
right at the same time, one of which you replied to just after I'd figured
out my mistake, so that one's moot now. However, I still have one question
I'm still trying to figure out.

Thanks again.

Any clue how to get the "news" option back when using Vista? In Vista,
Windows Mail has replaced Outlook Express. When following the same
procedure as Diane described the "news" option under "Go" does not reappear.

I added it to outlook 2007 running on vista. if it's not in the go category,
go into control panel, internet properties, programs tab - internet programs
section. click set programs and select mail (news) and set it as the
default.

No success using the suggested procedure. FWIW, I am using Outlook 2003.
As a workaround, I downloaded Windows Live Mail Desktop. No problem
accessing newsgroups or POP/Hotmail.

Thanks for your help!
