Is there a news group reader that most people here use? I'm looking for one that actually downloads news article files as opposed to giving you a peek at a distant server while online.

I think this was hashed over in the Thunderbird group.

Thunderbird does all this. If you so mark the group to work off line
and download all data.

And the default is not 'peeking' at a server, you are downloading
headers (subject) and refraining from downloading the message body till
you want or need to. For bandwidth its the preferred way. But
again, you can change Thunderbird to fit your desires. Couldn't find
it in OE however.

I think this was hashed over in the Thunderbird group.

Thunderbird does all this. If you so mark the group to work off line

There is unlikely to be any "most people" favorite. You can use
Outlook Express, and there are many other choices, some of which are
free and some of which you have to buy. I use Agent myself.

Nope. Not a single soul has told me how to delete a single news article or my choice of news articles. You can copy them, but you can't move them. TB handles files ONLY by wholesale methods (delete a big pile of articles within so many days) . My search for a news reader that genuinely manages files (move message "a" to folder "q" for instance) starts way beyond TB.

Switch from email to news and a whole row of tool bar icons are greyed out instantly. That is simple, incontrovertible fact. I'm flabbergasted that people deny it. Talking on and on about how a series of various work arounds can get you remotely close to this or that feature... ludicrous.

Show me how a = simple click of an icon will make a single news article (and its indexing) disappear forever (as it does in email) and I'll shut up. All I want is to have email type features available in news. Saying they are available means you've had too much peyote.

That is to say, I'm looking precisely to be able to do something with ONE MESSAGE AT A TIME. From day one, I've asked how to delete a single news article from my computer. The first reply declared that you can't delete news articles from the SERVER - a totally unrelated issue. Other replies declared how easily you could get TB to delete huge piles of news articles, some day, in a general attrition process. Again, totally unrelated to my need to delete this article or that article, but not piles of them at once.

You have made it very clear that you love TB to death. You have made it clear you think I should love TB to death. I have much greater appreciation for the replies I've gotten that answer my question - what OTHER news programs people HERE (not at the Thunderbird site) might use. Insisting, in essence, that I'm out of my mind for wanting something you don't want and that I shouldn't want what I want is impertinent in this thread.

I asked what people here use. Why can't you just let people here answer.

My apologies to any moderators here. But I was not the one who turned my simple question into a circus.

Are all versions of Agent a combination of both email and newsreader? Or are there some versions that are for news only? I like Thunderbirds email handling. But of course I could convert my email again and scratch Thunderbird completely - if Agent is that good.

The current version is 4.2, and yes, it does both E-mail and news. I
don't know enough about previous versions to answer your question.

A new version, 5.0 is due out soon.

Not that I know of, but as I said, I don't know for sure about older
versions.

Personally, I use Agent as a newsreader only, and don't use its E-mail
capabilities. Since I'm happy with Microsoft Outlook for E-mail, I
haven't even tried Agent's E-mail capabilities.

Actually I don't seem to be able to even get that going.

Just run it by typing and executing the name of its executable file:
msimn.exe

If you like it and want to continue using it, you can put a shortcut
to that file name on the desktop, or even on the start menu, if you
want it there.

Before you flame someone you might check your facts. I never said
anything about "highlighting" anything. That was a reply from Roy
Smith about OE and how to do it there.

And I didn't come over from TB. I read several groups and I read the
question there and here both. You didn't cross post.

And 3rd, the is a public group. If you post a message you will get all
sorts of responses. Its a fact of life. Get used to it. Take them
with a grain of salt.
