News reader is not available in Outlook 2003

About 4 days ago, I migrated my Outlook Express account to
Outlook 2003 and successfully added the News button to the
Go menu and the Standard toolbar. I tested them and the
Outlook Newsreader displayed, with the groups I had been
viewing in OE.

Now, when I click on the shortcuts to display the
newsreader, it just displays an Explorer window. I deleted
the shortcuts, reset the Standard toolbar and the Menu and
when I tried to add the News buttons back, they were not
listed.

I existed Outlook and opened Internet Options in Control
panel and the only program listed as available for the
news was Outlook Express, but it was not selected.

I've tried to do a repair of Outlook, but it didn't work.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Pat

Didn't think you can do news in Outlook -- as far as I know you can't, you
still need OE for that.

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/outnews switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook.

Thanks so much.

Hi - I am having the very same problem. When I first went into customise
the news button was there and I moved it into the left column but it then
disappeared. I have searched for the files but cant find anything that
looks right. I would really appreciate any help or I can see myself using
OE for news and outlook 2003 for everything else.

Thanks
Leila

Hi - yes I have read them and followed the advice but still cant get news on
the task bar. I have reinstalled office and can now see news as an option
when when I go into 'tools' then 'customise'. However I still cant access
the newsgroups via outlook 2003, only by outlook express.

Outlook uses Outlook Express as newsreader - it's NOT an inherent function
in Outlook. When you click on "News" in Outlook, it opens OE.

Of course. The News button launches OE. Outlook is not and never will be a
news reader.

I expect I am being a bit dim here but the problem is that I cant launch OE
through Outlook because there I am unable to get the news button onto the
menu bar (or onto anything).

In each post you seem to say something different.
The advice I posted is the only way to get the News command back on the
Toolbar.

What happens when you drag it to a menu or toolbar?
