"News" Button Missing

While trying to add the "News" button to the drop-down "Go" menu in Outlook
2003, the News button disappeared. Now we cannot find it anywhere. This
means we cannot run Outlook's News Reader, apparently. I cannot find any
guidance on the MS site on how to restore a lost "button." Where do missing
buttons go? Is there a button lost-and-found? Can I get a new one?

Try the following -- it seems to work for many:

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/newsonly switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook.

Kind of a strange solution, but it seems to work. Not that it makes any
sense, but what does these days?

Thanks.

I'm curious why this makes no sense to you, since Outlook uses (and has
always used) Outlook Express to do its news reading.

But that's exactly why it is puzzling. Since, as you note, Outlook uses
Outlook Express as the newsreader, why would the "news" button only appear
in Outlook if a blank is listed as the default newsreader. Why should
having Outlook Express selected as the default news reader cause the "news"
button to disappear from Outlook?

It doesn't. You have to select Outlook Express as your default. Here again
is a quote from Jocelyn's message:

Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch

Notice she says "change the default newsreader to Outlook Express". How
does that constitute a blank default?
Why should having Outlook Express selected as the
default news reader cause the "news" button to disappear from Outlook?

It doesn't. It brings it back.
