Newer Version of Front Page

Will we soon see an even better Front Page soon? Maybe a 2005 or 2006
version with even cooler effects. Maybe more script language and more
freindly video and audio insertion capabilities? How about some easy flash
tools. The market is advancing fast, I'd like to continue using Front Page to
build my websites.

Define "soon".

For the past few releases, Microsoft has distributed public betas 6-8 months
before a new version of Office ships. So far, Microsoft has announced no
betas. Thus, unless Microsoft breaks their pattern...

At the same time, pages like http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/ seem
to imply that a new release *is* in the works for some future date. To locate
more such pages, browse http://search.microsoft.com and search for "office
12" (including the quotes).

In the meantime, if you're itching for something new to play with, try
Visual Web Developer 2005 Express beta 2. Information and downloads are
available from http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/vwd/default.aspx.

Visual Web Developer is a subset of the next release of Visual Studio
specifically crafted for hobbyists and small Web site developers. It's *not*
an Office product, but it's *much* easier to use than, say, Visual Studio
2003. And you can create DHTML menus, tree views, breadcrumbs,
self-registration systems, secured pages, surprisingly powerful database
features, and Master Pages (which are like DWTs on steriods) working
strictly though the GUI: that is, without writing any program code. There's
even a built-in Web server, so you don't have to install IIS.

Just remember that:

o This is still a beta.
o Any host you engage will need to be running ASP.NET 2.0 beta 2 on
the Web server.
o The final product might work differently than the beta (i.e. it might
require
you to rework some things).
o You should never use a beta of anything for critical work.

An aside. Take a look at this page that I found while exploring the
possibilities of Visual Studio:
http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2005/default.aspx If I minimize the page
it's OK but if I view it full screen various elements overlap badly!! It
only happened when I first opened the page ... I can't get the problem
version of the page back now.

There have been some discussions about a Visual Web Designer book but a
couple of things are still in the air. There's certainly nothing to announce
yet.
