Newbie questions on WinPE

D

Dave August

I'm finely starting on my WinXPe dev project.

I've read most of the MSDN getting started docs and think I have a
reasonable handle on things, but it's Newbie question time.

I'm using the MSDN D/L of the eval version of the dev enviornment... Uh..
where can I get an ISO of the "disk 1" that has WinPE on it (or where are
the files I need to ake one)... I'd like to get PE up so I can use the
network...

My target does have a bootable CD ( I actually made a boot CD with DOS on it
to get things going) but doesn't have a HardDisk on it, but does have 16MB
of "Disk on a chip" running as IDE0 Primary, and a CF slot running as IDE1
primary.. I've run TA off of the CF and am now proceeding to build my first
test systems... Will WinPE run OK without a HardDisk for a pagefile?

TIA (and I'm sure more questions later)

Hi Dave,

You can order eval CDs that have WinPE on first disk from any distributor.

TA will not give you complete picture of that machine, but it is a start.
You should also add some of Macro components like Minlogon macro to include generic support for hardware to keep you going.

You don't need pagefile and it is disabled by default.

Hi ya Slobodan,

Thanks for the hints, I'll probably wait on the CD order, kinda funny the
MS doesn't have a D/L for that...

TA groped out enough that I *think* this build I just made is gonna work,
and yeah I went MiniLogon for the first crack.

COOL that page file is disabled, I doubt seriously that I'll need it, my
image is looking like 22MB without my app, I can't imagine it getting too
huge but my app is MFC and does use WinSocks... This target does have 128MB
so I think I'm in good shape, I use no local storage during execution I only
read a small .ini file for some simple configuration info.

I'm sure you'll hear more from me in the days to come :)

Thanks again.
