newbie question

Folks,

I'm trying to setup a test Active Directory server that will
authenticate a Tomcat application.

In particular, I'm trying to follow the directions given here:
http://www.java-internals.com/code/jndi_realm.html

I'm sure this is basic but there is a step "create security groups for
the role you would like to use".

It seems as though "security group" is an informal term -- I can't
find it in the AD reference book at all. Is this the same as a Group
Policy?

More generally, what is the most expedient way to add an arbitrary
role to a user?

No, you create a Group of type securtiy and put user accounts in that group.
You do this with new Group command in Active Directory Users and Computers
