Here's what I'd like to do:

Install Windows XP (Pro), all my vital drivers, a couple of 'must have' apps
and set up my internet settings.

Once I have done all that, before I continue to install all my other
software I would like to create a backup of the current install so that
should I have to reformat etc. in the future I simply need to pop in a CD
backup of my fresh install backup. This will save the tiresome job of going
through the Windows set-up, reinstalling drivers etc.

Is there some easy to use, no frills *safe* software that will allow this
newbie to do this?

Thanks,

David.

Buy a 2nd hard drive and purchase something like Drive Image. You can then
make an image of your XP disk that can be restored very quickly should the
XP disk fail.

Yes, this is easily done with third-party software such as Norton Ghost,
DriveImage, or BootItNg. Go to each software mftr.'s website and read
about their program. The best value is BING, but it isn't exactly
newbie-friendly. I haven't ever used DI, but Ghost has worked well for
me many times.

Image for Windows, from the same site as BING (www.bootitng.com) is only
for making images like this, but is a great deal friendlier. And will
produce a set of CDs (or even better DVDs) which can be booted directly
for the restore

I use Norton’s ghost from system works pro 2003-no updates.
However it is not simple. (It took trial & error) And plenty of
cd-roms. Remember to backup all your drivers. Also Burn I386 folder
on to the cd. Make sure you can boot up you cd drive from a boot
disk. You can test it with a windows 98 bootdisk from bootdisk.com
