Newbie needing help with Real Player 10

V

Vespascoot

I am new to using computers and am having trouble with the clips I
have downloaded into my Real Player 10.
I imported them into the library part of the player and could play
them, but when I went to play them at a later time, they had red
crosses next to them and a box appeared that said "clip not found."
I discovered that I could still play them by going to "add files to
my library" and opening them from there.
I tried deleting and re-downloading them but they still had crosses
and couldn't be played.
I can't understand why I can play them from one place in the player
but not another. Are they still in the computer somewhere?
I recently deleted all my temporary files, could this have caused it?
There are still about 3 clips in the library that can be played. What
on earth is going on? I have asked for help using the customer support
section but they just send automatic replies that have nothing to do
with the problem.
I hope someone can help as I have spent several days trying to sort
it. It's probably something simple and hopefully nothing wrong with
the computer.

Help please!

It's possible that what it happening is that files are being renamed by another
app. For example, iTunes has the option of "keeping your library organized".
What that means is that iTunes automatically renames all the files in its
library according to its naming scheme. i.e. Artist\Album\01 Track Name.m4a
If you use RP10 to rip a CD as an .m4a AAC file, it will have a hyphen between
the track number and the track name. That is the filename that RP10 has in its
database. If you then import that track into iTunes, it will be renamed. At
that point, RP10 will no longer be able to find it.
You do have a few options:
1. Choose one media player and stick with it. RP10 will play nearly any codec
on the market. I use iTunes for ripping, because I prefer the "keep your
library organized" option. I also use RP10, but I instead use the "watched
folders" option, so any new files in my library will automatically be imported
into its database. Tools/Preferences/My Library/Advanced My Library. There you
can choose the folder your library is located in, as well as add "watched
folders".
2. If your RP10 library is filled with these missing files, go to Tools/Remove
missing media. This scan will get rid of all the "orphans" in your library, but
will not actually erase any file from your hard drive.

Thank you for replying.
You will probably think I'm pretty dumb.
I don't understand the terms you used. What is itunes, codec, AAC?
I was prompted by a box to do what you said, that is to go to Tools
and remove the missing media. I did this and the clips disappeared. I
don't understand what happens to them after that. Do they get erased
or do they go somewhere in the computer?
I downloaded them again and dragged them from the temporary files
window into the player window where they appeared with the red crosses
again.
This happened also when I right clicked them in the library and
checked the box that says "also delete from hard drive". If this gets
rid of them from there, how come I can still play them from other
places such as the history?
I thought I would be able to start afresh by downloading them again
off the websites.
I was told that another way to do it is to right-click on the clip to
download, select "save target as" and save it to somewhere like My
Music.
I tried this successfully and they all play OK. I have no idea how to
burn them onto a CD from there. Is it easy? Do I need to go on a
course in computing to learn how to do it?
Should I delete all the clips in the player library off the hard drive
again and just use the "save target as" method?

iTunes - some software similar to Real Player
codec - software used to COmpress and DECompress music into files
AAC - one of many music file formats

They may have gone somewhere else on the computer. Go to Start > Search
and see if they have gone somewhere

You may either be playing them from the Recycle Bin, or you've
downloaded many copies of the file and put them all over your hard drive.

I think you can burn music CDs with Real Player 10. Does it have a Help
function?

Should I delete all the clips in the player library off the hard drive

You could drag them all into My Music and consolidate what you have.
Redownloading music again and again is a waste of time if you have
copies all over your hard drive already.

Thanks for your email Mike.
I tried to reply to it but got a message saying "delivery failure".
I did as you said by going to Search and there they were. One of each.
What was I supposed to do with them? I guessed you meant for me to put
them in the recycle bin to get rid of them so I did that, one at a
time. Then I was worried I'd lose all sorts of stuff so I restored
them back to the search window. Then 2 of each appeared! I then sent
one of them back to the bin again and both of each disappeared from
the search window instead of just one. I restored it back again and
now there are 3 of them!!! What the hell is happening?
Shall I send everything to the bin and start all over again or will
they "breed" even more? You must think this is hilarious.
Please help before I take a hammer to the bloody thing!

My direct email is hidden. You should always reply direct to the newsgroup.

Make sure you have one copy of everything you want under My Music and
delete the rest. When you are satisfied that you havbe what you need, go
to your Recycle Bin (on the desktop). Right click it and choose the
Empty command.

When RP10 removes missing media, it merely removes them from its database. As
Mike suggested, consolidate allow your music files into your My Music folder.
Burning a CD is very easy in RP10; just follow the steps.
Select the clips in your library. In the task pane on the left, click the CD
Burner button and choose "add selected clips". Continue to do that until you
think you have enough to fill a disc (74 or 80 minutes). When you are ready,
click on the CD Burner button again, and this time choose "View". Once you are
on the CD burner tab, it will list your tracks, and in the lower left corner, it
will show how much time is left, if any. Click the "edit options" button to give
the disc a title, etc.

Feel free to contact me via e-mail.

Thanks again,

I went to My Music and there is one icon for each clip that I
downloaded. I then went to Search and there appeared to be 2 copies of
each clip and loads of copies of different little sounds like bells
etc. I guess these are alert sounds that the computer makes. I left
these alone.
I then deleted all the clips to the recycle bin as you suggested. I
then went to My Music and found that my clips had gone. I have left it
like that with the clips still in the recycle bin.
It looks like I will lose the clips in My Music if I empty the bin.
Please advise.

I don't know what your search wsa for. It sound liek you searched for
all music files or something.

If you are going to keep deleting the files in My Music there is not
much I can do to help you. I think you need to get some basic training
in computer usage.
