What I want to do is archive a lot of Hi8 footage onto DVD. I have a Sony
Digital 8 camcorder and have captured and saved movies in DV-AVI format via
firewire as I understand this retains the best quality image. However, when
playing the saved DV-AVI on my PC it looks grainy and poor - original image
looks OK on the TV straight off the camcorder though. Am I doing something
wrong? Can someone tell me the best (and cost effective) way to save some
sentimental old Hi8's of the kids onto DVD?

Thanks.

I have done the same thing with older standard 8mm tapes
on my Sony TRV460. I noticed that most video, even
standard DVDs look a lot more 'grainy' on my flat monitor
than they do on the TV. Even when I play a standard DVD
and use the out to TV from the video card it looks better.
So I don't judge how the quality looks on the PC. I know I
am using the best setting at DV-AVI so i judge the final
output which is the final DVD and it is pretty good. Do a
test burn on a DVD and see how the TV quality is.
