Newbie: How can I fade out parts of my slide when the slide exits?

When I click my slide in a Slide Show to go to the next slide, I want two of
the objects (pictures) on my slide to fade out. I tried Custom Animations,
but I ended up having to click once to start the fade-out, and click again
to go to the next slide.

Can this be done?

Trying to picture what you want. You want to click once, have two
objects fade out, afterwhich you want the slide to advance?

One way: After the slide in question, add an identical slide but
without the two objects. Set that slide to advance automatically in x
seconds. (Transistions in the Slide Show menu.) Set the transition of
the original slide to fade.

Uh, check that, partner. Set the transition for the second slide to
fade and automatic advance after x seconds. The first slide doesn't
need the fade transition.
