Newbie Can't Ping Between 2 win2k crossover-connected machines

Peter

Hi,

I'd like to fileshare between my laptop and desktop using
ethernet LAN. A crossover cable connects them. I've
configured them as best I can according to Knowledgbase
articles, but when I double click "Computers Near Me" I
get an error message- "Workgroup not accesible. The List
of Servers for this workgroup is not currently
available." I also edited the hosts.sam files with the IP
addresses and names of the opposite machines.

If I ping from one machine to the other, there's no
response.

Do I have to assign a Host Name to each machine, and if
so, how do I do it? Is there something else I'm missing?

Much respect,

Peter

Do this on each PC:
- Start a Command Prompt
- Type this command:
ipconfig /all > c:\test.txt

Now post again and include c:\test.txt from each
PC in your post.

Ping Problem Fixed, my firewall was on. I still get
the "workgroup not accessible" message, though.

I wasn't able to make the test.txt work, so here are the
results, typed out manually:

Both PCs have the same address according to your results. On one of the
computers, change your IP address to 169.254.208.185 (or something different
then the other, while still being on the same subnet). Rather than browse
your network places, you might have better luck by sharing the folder(s) you
want to access. Then from My Computer, right click and choose "map network
drive" type in \\169.254.208.185\sharename Keep in mind that the IP you
type in should be the computer you are trying to access and the sharename is
the folder that you shared.
