newbie...burning a cd

I am trying to burn a bllank cd for the first time. My computer is new, an
ISUS with pentium 4 and I have windows xp professional. I've followed all the
steps in the instructions but I keep getting a message there is no device
detected.

I know the cd player works, I know this computer is not supposed to need an
extra attached device to burn a cd.......

PLEASE will anyone be so kind and help with some trouble shooting advice?
