New XP install - best way to backup?

B

Bill Watt

Finally got XP installed on my Notebook.

Before I turn it off what's the best way to do a complete backup so
it can be restored?

I have an 80 GB USB drive that I can access from DOS if needed. But
not sure if restoring from DOS gets it all.

And a CD burner.

Help has a problem so I can't use that until/if I can fix it.

Also where do I go to set a restore point?

Thanks for any advice.

IMHO, use Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost to create an image on either another
drive (prefered) or partition.

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
You can either Create or Restore from it.

Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools, click System Restore
Thanks for any advice.
The Windows-supplied backup program isn't too bad.

Hi Brian, long time :)

Well, Help didn't work, Restore didn't work or IE.
I took a chance and re-booted, now they all work. :)
FINALLY. Setup did re-boot at the end.

I have Ghost but it's an older version. I believe it creates an
image and you need to use it's Explorer to restore individual files.
I'd prefer one that copies file by file for easier retrieval.

I set a restore point.

Now to try to setup a wireless connection to my wireless router. :-(
Help should help with that.

Thanks.

Which version?
All of the version I used prior to and includung the one I use now had/has the
ability to backup/restore the full drive, individual drives/partitions, selected
directory/directories or selected file/s.
If your missing the manual and need one, let me know and I'll get one to you if I
have the version you need.

Should'nt have any trouble with that, just make sure you change the routers default
un/pw, keeping the default one is a huge security risk.
Thanks.

Doubtful if you have similar hardware, but, may give you ideas.

I use a program called DriveImage 7.0 to image. In the case of my notebook,
I connect the notebook to the PC via firewire for a LAN system. Map a
partition on the PC to backup to. Save the image in 2000 MB chunks. Save 2
chunks each CD via a burner on the PC in ISO 9660 format (native to all
operating systems).

For restoration, I boot from the DI 2007 CD on the notebook. Remove that
CD, and place the CD image media in its place. Then do the restore of that
image to the notebook.
