new windows update software required

I just reinstalled XP.
I am trying to do the updates and get this message

new windows update software required

when I click on UPDATE NOW it flashes a window that says it is dnldg,
but nothing happens.

what do I do.

the file version od wupdmgr is the same on a working computer.

Thanks Kelly, but I tried that previously and the result is the same.

when the MS site opens it tells me that the site has been updated and
I need to dnld a new version of the update software. But when I click
UPDATE NOW nothing happens.
